Deckhand

Edumar is approved by the CBR to give the Deckhand basic training according to the European rules. After completing this training, the candidate receives a Deckhand Statement.

Emergency Responder Certificate (BHV)
After the training, the candidate also has the skills of an Emergency Responder (BHV) according to Article 15 of the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet).

What can you do with it?

The Deckhand certificate gives the candidate these possibilities:

  1. Apply for a Service Record Book with the Deckhand qualification. For this, the candidate must also have a medical check.

  2. Admission to the Practical Boatman Exam. This exam can only be taken 6 months after the registration date.

Training content

The training covers:

  1. Risks of falling into the water
  2. Working conditions on a inland navigation vessel
  3. Firefighting on board
  4. Personal protective equipment
  5. Handling dangerous substances
  6. First aid on board
Training format

The EU rules say the Deckhand training must be 3 days.

At Edumar, the training is organised like this:

  • Two days online – The candidate follows the lessons at their own time. They can use a computer, tablet, or phone with internet.
  • One practical day on board the training ship HORIZON in Krimpen aan den IJssel. This day focuses on practical exercises.
Order of lessons

There is no required order. The candidate can complete the parts in any order.

After registration and payment, you get access to the online Deckhand environment.
Here you can:

  • Follow the lessons at your own pace
  • Book your practical day (booking is only possible online)

After completing both parts, you can apply for the Deckhand certificate.

Language

The online lessons are in Dutch and English.

The practical day is in English, with simple nautical English explanations. The candidate may answer in Dutch.

Exam

The online part has 6 chapters (see Training Content). Each chapter has a theory test after the lesson. Tests are in Dutch and English.

No exam on the practical day. Attendance is checked actively.

    (Note: Cancel or change the date up to 1 week before the practical day. After that, the fee is €195.)
